Water for weight loss

Water does not burn fat and does not replace food and movement. But when you are losing weight it helps to drink your amount every day and not mistake thirst for hunger. Here is how to work it out and stick to it.

Does drinking water help you lose weight?

Not by itself. Weight comes off through what you eat and how much you move. Water helps you keep a routine, and a glass before a meal is an easy habit to start with.

How much water to drink to lose weight

There is no separate “weight loss amount”: there is your usual one. Drip works it out from weight and height: 35 ml per kilogram for men and 31 ml for women, plus 500 ml on a workout day.

Drinking far more than that will not speed things up.

The amount changes with your weight

The lower your weight, the lower the amount. A woman who is 165 cm needs 2,150 ml a day at 70 kg (154 lb) and 1,850 ml at 60 kg (132 lb). Update your weight in Drip and the amount recalculates itself.

Workout days

On a workout day Drip adds 500 ml with one switch. It is easier to drink before, during and after the session than all at once.

Watch what you drink

Sweet drinks count towards your amount but bring calories. Juice and soda count 85%, beer 60%. If you are losing weight, make water and unsweetened tea the base: tea counts 95%.

Questions

How much water should I drink to lose weight?

Your usual amount: by Drip’s formula, 35 ml per kilogram for men and 31 ml for women, adjusted for height, plus 500 ml on a workout day.

Can drinking more water help you lose weight faster?

No. More than your amount is not faster. Drip’s calculator never suggests more than 4,500 ml a day, even with a workout.

Is there a water intake calculator for weight loss?

Use the regular one: enter your current weight, and update it as it changes. The amount follows your weight.

This is not medical advice. If you have kidney or heart problems, are pregnant or your doctor limits fluids, your doctor sets the amount.
