How to drink more water

Almost nobody forgets to drink on purpose. The day is busy and thirst is a quiet signal. What works is not willpower but a few simple habits and one reminder at the right moment.

Know your amount

A goal you do not have is hard to hit. Work out your amount from your weight and height in the calculator: “9 glasses” is a habit you can build, “more” is not.

Ways to drink more water

You will not need to force it if water is always at hand and tied to things you already do:

  • start the morning with a glass while the coffee brews
  • keep a bottle or a glass on your desk, in sight
  • drink a glass before every meal
  • have a glass of water with your coffee
  • refill as soon as you finish the last one

How often to drink water

Split your amount into equal portions across the hours you are awake. A glass every hour and a half to two hours is easier than catching up on the whole amount in the evening.

Log what you drink. When you can see progress, you want to close the day: it works better than any promise to yourself.

Reminders that do not nag

A plain “drink water” alarm soon gets swiped away unread. Drip works differently: you set when you are awake and how often to remind you, and the droplet messages you in Telegram in its own voice, from gentle to cheeky.

If you have already drunk more than you need by that hour, Drip stays quiet. Hit your amount and there are no more messages until tomorrow. You can log a glass right from the chat with one button.

If plain water is a struggle

Tea, milk and soup count too, just not in full: tea counts 95%, milk and soup 90%. Add lemon, mint or berries if plain water feels boring.

Questions

How can I start drinking more water?

Work out your amount, keep water in sight, tie a glass to the morning and to meals, and set reminders for the hours you are awake.

Is there an app that reminds you to drink water?

Drip is a Telegram bot, so there is nothing to install. It works out your amount, reminds you on your schedule and keeps quiet when you are ahead.

How often should you drink water?

A glass every hour and a half to two hours while you are awake is comfortable. That spreads the amount over the day without effort.

This is not medical advice. If you have kidney or heart problems, are pregnant or your doctor limits fluids, your doctor sets the amount.
