How much water to drink a day

There is no single number for everyone: the amount depends on your weight, height, sex and whether you worked out today. Here is how to work out yours, and how to drink it without turning the day into glass counting.

Now you know the amount; all that’s left is drinking it. The droplet messages you in Telegram on your schedule and keeps quiet when you are ahead.

Why “eight glasses” is not your number

The familiar advice gives everyone the same amount. But a person who weighs 50 kg and one who weighs 100 kg cannot need the same amount of water.

Drip starts from weight: 35 ml per kilogram for men and 31 ml for women. Height above 170 cm adds a little, below takes a little away. A workout day adds 500 ml on top.

How much water a man should drink

A man who is 180 cm (5′11″) and 80 kg (176 lb) needs 2,850 ml a day by this formula: about 96 fl oz, or 11 glasses of 250 ml. At 175 cm and 70 kg (154 lb) it is 2,450 ml, about 83 fl oz.

How much water a woman should drink

A woman who is 165 cm (5′5″) and 55 kg (121 lb) needs 1,700 ml a day: about 57 fl oz, or 7 glasses. At the same height and 60 kg (132 lb) it is 1,850 ml.

The quickest way to get your own number is the calculator: it uses the same formula as the bot.

In litres, ounces and glasses

For an adult between 50 and 100 kg, Drip’s formula lands between about 1.5 and 3.5 litres. The calculator never goes below 1.5 or above 4.5 litres, which is roughly 51 to 152 fl oz.

It goes down easier spread over the day: in the morning, between tasks, with lunch and in the afternoon, rather than catching up in the evening.

What counts towards it

Not only plain water. Drip counts drinks honestly:

  • water: 100%
  • tea and sports drinks: 95%
  • coffee, milk, soup: 90%
  • juice and soda: 85%
  • energy drinks: 80%
  • beer: 60%

How much water is too much

More is not better. Drip’s calculator never suggests more than 4,500 ml a day, even with a workout. If you constantly want to drink far more than usual, talk to a doctor.

Questions

How much water should I drink a day based on my weight?

By Drip’s formula, 35 ml per kilogram for men and 31 ml for women, adjusted for height, plus 500 ml on a workout day. In pounds that is roughly half an ounce of water per pound for men, a little less for women.

Do I need to drink 2 litres a day?

Not necessarily. Two litres is an average. Your amount depends on your weight, height, sex and activity, so it is better to work it out for yourself.

Do tea and coffee count?

Yes, but not in full: tea counts 95%, coffee 90%. Drip does the maths for you.

How do I remember to drink it?

Spread it over the day and set reminders. Drip messages you in Telegram on your schedule and keeps quiet when you are ahead.

This is not medical advice. If you have kidney or heart problems, are pregnant or your doctor limits fluids, your doctor sets the amount.
